Indian Railways has launched a nationwide initiative to modernize freight train brake vans, focusing on enhancing the working conditions, safety, and comfort of train managers. This upgrade follows the Railway Board’s official approval granted on August 6, 2026, and aligns with 2024 directives from the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) to improve on-board infrastructure. The project directly addresses long-standing requests from staff for a more ergonomic and functional workspace during long-haul freight operations.
Key highlights of the upgraded brake vans include:
- 360-degree swivel chairs with custom-fabricated footrests for ergonomic support.
- Solar-powered electrical systems featuring rooftop panels, a Combined Control Unit (CCU), and 12.8V, 110Ah lithium ferro phosphate batteries.
- Modernized interiors with polyamine epoxy resin flooring and improved hygiene-focused commode designs.
- Enhanced utility features such as dedicated walkie-talkie stands, coat hooks, bottle holders, and universal key-fitted door locks.
Innovation from Jhansi Workshop
The successful prototype for the modified BVZI and BVCM brake vans was developed by the Wagon Repair Workshop (WRW) in Jhansi under the North Central Railway. Completed on February 27, 2026, each unit modification costs approximately Rs 5 lakh. This prototype has set the benchmark for the nationwide rollout, proving that high-tech upgrades can be implemented efficiently within the existing fleet.
Phased Nationwide Rollout
Following the successful prototype, Indian Railways has initiated a tender process for the modification of 400 brake vans. To date, 42 units have already been upgraded and put into service. The remaining units are scheduled for modification in a phased manner across all railway zones. Early adoption of these improved coaches has already been noted at the East Central Railway’s Barwadeeh railway junction. This transformation marks a significant step forward in prioritizing the welfare of train managers who play a critical role in the seamless movement of freight across the country.
