Indian Railways has introduced a new safety system called the Safety Alarm Point Unit (SPAU) across 112 stations in the Jodhpur Division. This system is designed to prevent human errors during train operations, specifically during shunting and crossover movements. The goal is to ensure that trains move safely without any technical or manual lapses at the stations.

📰: New Train Announcement: Indian Railways to launch daily MEMU service between Nakaha and Gonda।

How does the SPAU system work

The system activates automatically as soon as a train enters the platform and starts a 3-minute countdown. If the track points are not set correctly within this time, a loud audio-visual alarm sounds to alert the staff. Once the train fully arrives, an LED light glows and a buzzer sounds on the Station Master’s panel, who then confirms the status by pressing an acknowledgement button.

Where has the system been installed

The Jodhpur Division has deployed these units across several key rail sections to improve discipline and safety. The distribution of the 112 SPAU systems is as follows:

Rail Section Number of Units
Samdari-Bhiladi 22
Raika Bagh-Jaisalmer 21
Samdari-Munabao 15
Merta-Phulera 12
Merta-Bikaner 12
Degana-Ratangarh 8
Jodhpur-Merta 9
Jodhpur-Marwar Junction 9

What is the impact on railway operations

According to Karniram, the Additional Divisional Railway Manager of Jodhpur, this system will catch even the smallest negligence at the station. The SPAU is directly integrated with the railway’s interlocking and signaling systems. This allows for simultaneous monitoring of both the tracks and the signals, reducing the risk of accidents during train movement.
