Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to dedicate four modernized railway stations in Punjab to the nation on Friday, July 17, 2026. This initiative is a significant milestone under the ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which focuses on transforming Indian railway terminals into world-class travel hubs that boost regional connectivity, tourism, and economic development. The event will see the physical inauguration of the Jalandhar Cantonment station, alongside the virtual launch of SAS Nagar (Mohali), Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Sri Anandpur Sahib stations.
Key highlights of the upcoming event include:
- Date and Time: July 17, 2026, at approximately 3:00 PM.
- Stations Covered: Jalandhar Cantonment (Physical), SAS Nagar, Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Sri Anandpur Sahib (Virtual).
- Investment: The 110-year-old Jalandhar Cantonment station has undergone a massive Rs 125 crore modernization project.
- Additional Launches: PM Modi will also inaugurate the redeveloped Gangapur City station in Rajasthan and flag off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind, Haryana.
Modern Amenities and Infrastructure Upgrades
These redeveloped stations are designed to provide a seamless passenger experience. Commuters can look forward to upgraded waiting areas, modern concourses, improved platforms, and the installation of new lifts and escalators. While the infrastructure is being brought up to global standards, the design plans have ensured that the local heritage of each station is carefully preserved. Railway Board Chairman Satish Kumar recently conducted a final review of the works to ensure readiness for the public.
Broader Impact of the Amrit Bharat Scheme
Beyond the four Punjab stations, the Prime Minister will virtually dedicate a total of 75 Amrit Bharat stations across India during the same event. This nationwide push underscores the Central Government’s commitment to upgrading railway infrastructure. Punjab BJP president Kewal Singh Dhillon and Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu have both confirmed the visit, noting that this project marks a landmark moment for the state’s transportation network. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and several state cabinet ministers are also slated to attend the ceremony at Jalandhar. This visit is particularly notable as it serves as the Prime Minister’s first trip to the state since the recent political shift regarding the BJP’s independent stance in upcoming Assembly elections.
