Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated 13 redeveloped railway stations in Madhya Pradesh on Friday, July 17, 2026, as part of the ambitious Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This move is part of a nationwide initiative that saw 75 stations across 20 states receive major upgrades, with an investment of approximately 1,570 crore rupees. The project aims to modernize rail infrastructure while ensuring stations serve as efficient, world-class transit hubs that reflect local heritage.
Key highlights of the redevelopment include:
- Modernization of 13 stations in Madhya Pradesh: Vidisha, Sanchi, Ashoknagar, Shivpuri, Beohari, Bhind, Harpalpur, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, Junnardeo, Balaghat, Chhindwara, and Nainpur.
- Focus on the ‘Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi’ theme, blending modern facilities with regional cultural elements.
- Upgrades designed for the next 40 to 50 years, including widened foot overbridges (from 4.5m to 12m), new ramps, and lifts.
- Enhanced passenger amenities such as upgraded platforms, smart public announcement systems, and digital display boards.
Modernizing Infrastructure for Future Travel
Harshit Shrivastava, Chief Public Relations Officer of West Central Railway (WCR), emphasized that these upgrades go beyond just aesthetics. The infrastructure is being built to accommodate passenger growth for the next 40 to 50 years. Notable improvements include expanded circulating areas, modern station buildings, and enhanced lighting, which will significantly improve the overall passenger experience. For instance, the Sanchi station has been specifically designed to highlight its rich Buddhist heritage.
A Long-Term Vision for Madhya Pradesh
This phase is only the beginning of a larger transformation for the state. A total of 80 stations in Madhya Pradesh are slated for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with an estimated total expenditure of roughly 3,000 crore rupees.
The virtual inauguration ceremony saw participation from key state and central leaders. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav joined from Tikamgarh, where he additionally inaugurated local development projects worth 189 crore rupees. Other dignitaries included Governor Mangubhai Patel in Sanchi, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan in Vidisha, and Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia in Ashoknagar.
