Northern Railway has issued an official notification regarding the temporary suspension of rail traffic between Delhi Junction and Delhi Shahdara Junction on August 15, 2026. This measure is being implemented to ensure the highest level of security during the Independence Day celebrations at the Red Fort. Passengers are advised to note the following key updates regarding the disruptions:
- Track closure timing: 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM on August 15, 2026.
- Cancellations: Four DMU and MEMU services, including the Delhi Junction-Saharanpur and Ghaziabad-Delhi Junction trains, are cancelled.
- Diversions: Trains originating from Khurja Junction and Bulandshahr will be diverted via New Delhi and Tilak Bridge.
- Parcel services: Suspended at New Delhi, Old Delhi, and Anand Vihar from August 12 to midnight on August 15.
- Operational restrictions: No trains will be permitted to halt at Yamuna Bridge, Bhairon Pul, or Tilak Bridge during the specified hours.
Security and Operational Adjustments
According to CPRO Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, the decision follows strict directives from security agencies to maintain a secure environment for the national ceremony. The suspension of services is a routine yet critical protocol designed to protect the Red Fort vicinity. Beyond the immediate track closure, the railway administration has intensified security checks and surveillance at all major stations across the National Capital Region to prevent any untoward incidents.
Advice for Commuters
Passengers planning travel on Independence Day should anticipate delays and potential crowding due to the diverted routes. While the core rail operations are expected to resume normal schedules on August 16, commuters are strongly urged to check the updated status of their specific trains via the NTES app or the official IRCTC website before heading to the station. The suspension of commercial parcel services at major hubs like Anand Vihar and New Delhi is also expected to impact logistics for those three days. Northern Railway officials have expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by these mandatory security protocols and have requested the public’s cooperation in ensuring a safe and peaceful Independence Day.
