Indian Railways has unveiled crucial updates for passengers planning their homecoming for the 2026 festive season. With Diwali falling on Sunday, November 8, 2026, and Chhath Puja following shortly after, the national transporter is preparing for a significant surge in passenger traffic. Travelers are encouraged to plan their journeys well in advance to secure confirmed berths during this peak travel window.

Key updates for the 2026 festive season include:

• General ticket reservations open 60 days prior to the journey date.

• Bookings for peak Diwali travel are expected to commence in early September 2026.

• Indian Railways is expected to deploy a massive fleet of special trains, building on the 12,000 special services operated in 2025.

• Mandatory Aadhaar-based OTP authentication is required for all online Tatkal bookings.

• A new token-based system for counter Tatkal bookings has been implemented by West Central Railway as of August 1, 2026.

Managing the Festive Rush

To accommodate the millions of passengers traveling home, Indian Railways traditionally increases its capacity through special train services. While the specific list of 2026 special trains is currently under preparation, passengers are advised to keep a close watch on the official IRCTC portal and Indian Railways’ social media channels. By opening reservations 60 days in advance, the railways aim to provide ample time for travelers to organize their trips before the last-minute rush begins.

Updated Tatkal Booking Protocols

Several important changes have been made to the Tatkal booking system to ensure transparency and fairness. For those relying on last-minute travel, AC class bookings (1A, 2A, 3A, CC, EC, 3E) open at 10:00 AM, while non-AC class bookings (SL, 2S) open at 11:00 AM, exactly one day before the journey date.

Security and efficiency remain a priority. Since July 15, 2025, Aadhaar-based OTP verification has been mandatory for online Tatkal transactions. Additionally, to prevent misuse, each IRCTC user ID is restricted to booking only one Tatkal ticket (covering up to four passengers) during the peak 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM window. Travelers should also note that no concessions, including senior citizen discounts, are applicable on Tatkal tickets. However, if a Tatkal ticket remains waitlisted after chart preparation, the system will automatically process a full refund, ensuring passenger convenience.
