Indian Railways is set to overhaul its Tatkal ticket booking system starting August 1, 2026, introducing stricter measures to eliminate touting and ensure equitable access for genuine passengers. These comprehensive updates cover both physical PRS counters and the IRCTC online platform, building on the digital security enhancements rolled out in 2025.
- New token system for physical counter bookings to manage queues.
- Strict booking restrictions for authorized railway agents during the first 30 minutes.
- Mandatory OTP verification for all online Tatkal transactions.
- Priority-based token distribution at physical counters.
Strategic Changes at PRS Counters
The West Central Railway (WCR) is leading the implementation of a new token-based system designed to bring order to physical booking counters. Saurabh Jain, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager of Kota Division, confirmed that tokens for AC classes will be distributed between 8:30 am and 9:00 am, while non-AC class tokens will be available from 9:30 am to 10:00 am. To maintain efficiency, each counter is limited to issuing 10 tokens for AC categories and 15 for non-AC categories. The system also differentiates between applicants, with Category A reserved for self or family members, and Category B for others, ensuring that tokens remain non-transferable.
Tackling Touts and Online Misuse
To prevent scalpers from monopolizing limited quotas, Indian Railways is implementing a 30-minute blackout period for authorized agents. This means agents will be barred from booking Tatkal tickets between 10:00 am and 10:30 am for AC classes and 11:00 am and 11:30 am for non-AC classes. This window is exclusively reserved for individual passengers to secure their travel plans without competing against high-speed automated systems operated by middlemen.
Furthermore, the IRCTC platform will now require mandatory OTP verification before a booking is finalized. This move follows the successful integration of Aadhaar authentication and AI-powered anti-bot measures introduced in July 2025. These collective efforts are part of a broader strategy to improve the booking success rate for legitimate travellers and restore transparency to the railway reservation process. By synchronizing these rules across the country, Indian Railways aims to significantly reduce the influence of black-market operators and provide a smoother, fairer experience for all commuters.
