IRCTC Update: New rules for Tatkal and General ticket booking and confirmation probability

Many passengers often get confused between booking a General or a Tatkal ticket to get a confirmed seat. Indian Railways follows a specific logic for confirmation that depends on the quota. While General tickets usually have a better chance of clearing, Tatkal tickets are riskier due to strict refund rules and limited quotas.

General vs Tatkal: Which ticket confirms faster?

General Waiting List (GNWL) tickets have the highest probability of becoming confirmed compared to Tatkal Waiting List (TQWL). Tatkal tickets only confirm if another passenger in the Tatkal quota cancels their seat. If a General quota seat becomes vacant, it is not given to a Tatkal waiting list passenger. Also, since confirmed Tatkal tickets offer no refund upon cancellation, fewer people cancel them, making the waiting list move very slowly.

New rules for ticket booking and Aadhaar verification

The railway is introducing several changes to stop fraud and improve the booking experience. From July 1, 2025, Aadhaar verification will be mandatory for all Tatkal bookings via IRCTC website and app. Further, from July 15, 2025, an additional OTP verification will be required. For general reserved tickets, only Aadhaar-verified users can book in the first 15 minutes of the window opening from October 1, 2025.

Upcoming AI system and agent restrictions

A new AI-powered booking system will launch by August 2026 to handle over 5 lakh tickets per minute. This system will predict confirmation chances with 94% accuracy. To help common passengers, IRCTC agents will be barred from booking Tatkal tickets in the first 30 minutes of the window opening starting July 1, 2025. Additionally, general waiting lists have been capped at 25% of available seats since June 17, 2025.

Waiting List Type Confirmation Chance
GNWL (General) Highest
RLWL (Remote Location) Low
PQWL (Pooled Quota) Very Low
TQWL (Tatkal) Generally Low

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Tatkal waiting list more likely to confirm than General waiting list?

No, General Waiting List (GNWL) has a higher confirmation chance. Tatkal tickets (TQWL) only confirm if someone else in the Tatkal quota cancels their seat.

What is the new Aadhaar rule for Tatkal bookings?

From July 1, 2025, Aadhaar verification will be mandatory for Tatkal bookings on IRCTC. From July 15, 2025, an additional OTP verification will also be required.
