Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang rail route on September 13, 2025. This project connects Mizoram’s capital Aizawl to the national railway network for the first time. The project cost over ₹8,071 crore and is designed to improve trade and tourism in the Northeast region.

What makes the Bairabi-Sairang route an engineering marvel?

The route is built through difficult hilly terrain and includes 48 tunnels and 142 bridges. A key highlight is Bridge No. 196, which stands between 104 to 114 meters high, making it taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar. Passenger trains on this route can operate at speeds of 90 to 100 km per hour.

How will this rail line change travel and trade in Mizoram?

The rail line significantly reduces travel time between major locations. A journey from Bairabi to Aizawl, which took 6-7 hours by road, now takes less than 1 hour by train. Similarly, the trip from Silchar to Aizawl is reduced from 8-12 hours to just 3 hours. This will help in transporting organic produce from Mizoram to other parts of India.
