Indian Railways is introducing a new Departure Alert System at Gwalior Railway Station to make travel safer for passengers. The system will use a distinctive ‘Tan-Tan-Tan’ bell sound to warn people that their train is about to leave. This move aims to reduce the number of passengers who miss their trains or try to board moving coaches.

How will the ‘Tan-Tan-Tan’ system work?

The system follows a specific sequence to alert passengers. First, a ‘Tan-Tan-Tan’ bell will ring, followed by an announcement of the train number and name. Once the bell stops ringing, it means the train is starting to move and passengers should stop trying to board. This sound is scientifically more effective than normal announcements in grabbing a person’s attention.

Which stations are implementing this system?

While Prayagraj and Jhansi stations already use this system, Gwalior is currently integrating it across all four platforms. Kanpur Central is also expected to launch this system shortly after May 16, 2026. The goal is to help passengers who step off the train for water or luggage to return to their seats on time.

What are the benefits for passengers?

  • Reduces last-minute panic and chaos on platforms.
  • Prevents accidents caused by boarding moving trains.
  • Decreases the need for emergency chain-pulling.
  • Provides a clear signal for passengers to return to their coaches.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What does the ‘Tan-Tan-Tan’ sound indicate?

It is a departure alert that warns passengers their train is about to leave. When the bell stops, it means the train is moving and boarding is no longer safe.

Which stations already have this system?

Prayagraj Junction and Jhansi station have already implemented this system, and Gwalior and Kanpur Central are following suit.
