Indian Railways is preparing to change the way people travel between cities. A new rail manufacturing unit in Kazipet, Telangana, will produce 200 modern indigenous intercity trains over the next five years. What are the features of these new intercity trains?
These trains are designed for short-distance travel, mainly for routes around 300 km. They will be ideal for students, daily workers, and patients traveling for healthcare. The trains will have the following features:
- Maximum speed of 130 kmph
- 20-coach configuration with two toilets per coach
- Automatic door closing and better ventilation
- Jerk-free couplers and advanced bogies
- Regenerative braking for energy efficiency and lower emissions
What is the status of the Kazipet Manufacturing Unit?
The foundation stone for this project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2023. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has completed the main civil and electrical work. On February 21, 2026, a successful trial run of a diesel locomotive and coach was conducted on the new connectivity track. The plant, including the paint and test shops, is expected to be fully commissioned by March 2026.
