The Indian Railways has introduced a significant welfare measure for the gallantry award winners of the Indian Armed Forces. Recipients of the Sena Medal, Nao Sena Medal, and Vayu Sena Medal will now be eligible for lifelong free travel across the railway network. This decision aims to recognize the bravery of soldiers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force and ensure a comfortable travel experience for them and their families.

What are the main benefits of this new railway facility

The Ministry of Railways has detailed the specific privileges that the medal winners and their families will receive under this new scheme. The benefits are designed to provide maximum comfort and honor to the nation heroes. The following points summarize the eligibility and travel rules for the beneficiaries:

  • Medal winners are entitled to lifelong free travel in First Class, Second AC, and AC Chair Car coaches.
  • One companion is allowed to travel for free along with the eligible medal winner.
  • Spouses of the award winners, including widows or widowers until remarriage, are covered under this scheme.
  • For unmarried posthumous award winners, their parents are eligible for the lifelong free travel facility.
  • The travel privilege is applicable across all zones of the Indian Railways.

Expansion of the gallantry awards list and latest updates

Previously, this free travel benefit was restricted to recipients of high-level gallantry awards such as the Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra, Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra.
