Indian Railways is upgrading its signaling systems to make train travel safer and more efficient. The Railway Board has approved several infrastructure projects and mandated strict audits to reduce human error and improve reliability. These updates focus on replacing old systems with electronic technology to ensure smoother train operations.

What are the key signaling projects and their costs?

The Ministry of Railways approved projects worth ₹1,364.45 crore to strengthen safety and communication. The investments are spread across different zones to modernize the network:

Zone Project Detail Cost
Southern Railway Kavach Version 4.0 on 232 locomotives ₹208.81 crore
Northern Railway OFC network over 3,200 route km ₹400.86 crore
North Central Railway OFC network over 2,196 route km ₹176.76 crore
South Central Railway Electronic interlocking at 49 stations ₹578.02 crore

How will the new signaling system improve safety?

The railways are moving toward Direct Drive Electronic Interlocking (DDEI) systems. This technology reduces the need for copper cables and relays, which lowers maintenance costs and protects the system from lightning. The DDEI system ensures that tracks are clear and level crossing gates are closed before a train is allowed to move, minimizing the risk of accidents.

What new audit rules have been introduced?

To maintain high safety standards, the Railway Board ordered a complete audit of signaling systems across the network. Starting April 29, 2026, Senior Administrative Grade (SAG) officers must conduct monthly audits in all zonal railways. These checks aim to identify faulty equipment and ensure that staff are following the correct maintenance procedures for both new and old systems.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the purpose of the new signaling audits?

The audits, mandated by the Railway Board, aim to identify deficiencies in the signaling network and ensure that all equipment functions correctly to prevent accidents.

Which technology is being used to replace old panel interlocking?

Indian Railways is replacing old panel interlocking with Electronic Interlocking (EI) and Direct Drive Electronic Interlocking (DDEI) to reduce human intervention and maintenance.
