Indian Railways has launched a specialized pilot project to equip Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTE) with advanced skills to spot counterfeit tickets on the spot. This initiative aims to curb ticket fraud and ensure that passengers travel with authentic documents. TTEs are now being trained to use a new seven-tier verification method and a dedicated mobile application for instant validation of both physical and digital tickets.

How will TTEs verify the authenticity of rail tickets?
TTEs will use a combination of physical and digital checks to confirm if a ticket is real. The verification process involves checking unique ticket numbers, security paper quality, and specific secret codes. For digital tickets, a special TTE app developed by the Center for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) allows for live verification. The app can scan encrypted QR codes on paper tickets and verify details directly from the railway servers using the ‘Check with Server’ option.
Key security features of genuine railway tickets
To help staff identify manipulated or AI-generated tickets, Indian Railways has highlighted several security markers that are difficult to forge. TTEs are being trained to look for specific details on the ticket stationery and digital screens as listed below:
- Security Paper: Authentic tickets are printed on thermal stationery with a specific texture and quality.
- Unique Number: Each valid ticket has a unique UTS number, whereas fake tickets often reuse the same number.
- Engine Symbol: A distinct engine icon is printed in the top left corner of legitimate tickets.
- Watermark: Official Indian Railways watermarks are present on the ticket paper.
- QR Codes: Encrypted QR codes that match the server data when scanned through the official TTE app.
- Color Codes: The UTS app uses specific daily color codes on mobile screens to prevent the use of old screenshots.
Western Railway and North Central Railway have already started intensive training sessions for their staff. TTEs are also using Handheld Terminal (HHT) machines to check real-time booking status, which makes the checking process transparent and eliminates the need for paper charts. This system helps in identifying empty seats and verifying the identity of passengers using integrated apps like mAadhaar.
