The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project has reached a major milestone as freight movement in Jammu and Kashmir gains speed. A total of 3,514 wagons were dispatched to Anantnag by March, marking a significant shift in how goods move into the valley. Even e-commerce giant Amazon has now started its delivery services in the region using railway and postal networks.

What are the latest updates on cargo and freight movement?

Between August 2025 and March 2026, 203 rakes were sent to Anantnag. Cement was the most imported item, making up 76% of these shipments, while apples were the primary export. In October 2025, activity peaked with 46 rakes, and Maruti Suzuki India became the first company to transport vehicles to the region via rail.

When will the direct passenger trains start?

A direct Vande Bharat Express service between Jammu and Srinagar is scheduled to start on April 30, 2026. Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnav and MoS Dr. Jitendra Singh will flag off the service from Jammu Railway Station. This follows the full operationalization of the USBRL project on April 28, 2026, providing all-weather connectivity through the Chenab and Anji Khad bridges.
