An explosion took place on the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) railway track between Rajpura and Shambhu in Patiala district, Punjab. The incident happened on the night of April 27, 2026, between 8:30 PM and 10:00 PM. Police and security agencies are investigating the matter as a possible conspiracy to target the freight corridor.

What happened during the Rajpura-Shambhu blast

The blast occurred under a moving train, causing damage to the railway track. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Varun Sharma stated that this was an attempted detonation. A badly mutilated body was recovered from the spot, identified as Jagrup Singh from Panjwar village, Tarn Taran. Police believe the deceased was the person attempting to plant the bomb.

Key evidence and investigation details

Security teams including the Punjab Police, GRP, RPF, and forensic experts reached the site. The following items were recovered from the scene:

Special DGP Shashi Prabha Dwivedi mentioned that the target was a critical freight corridor. The NIA may enter the investigation as agencies view this as a terror plot. This is the second such incident on the DFC in Punjab this year, following a similar blast in Fatehgarh Sahib on January 23, 2026.

Current status of railway operations

Railway officials and DFCCIL management are working on the site. Repair work for the damaged track is underway. One line has been restored to allow the movement of goods trains. This event follows an email threat received a week ago warning of blasts on railway lines between Ambala and Delhi on April 24.
