In a stern move to ensure passenger safety and prevent unauthorized access, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Hubballi Division took decisive action against trekkers at the popular Dudhsagar Falls in Goa. On Sunday, July 5, 2026, authorities apprehended 32 tourists found illegally walking along the railway tracks. Each offender was fined ₹500, amounting to a total penalty of ₹16,000 as part of a special enforcement drive conducted by the RPF.
Strict Safety Regulations and Legal Consequences
South Western Railway maintains a strict prohibition on trekking along railway tracks near Dudhsagar Falls, especially during the monsoon season which spans from June to October. These tracks are deemed hazardous for pedestrians due to the challenging terrain and weather conditions. Violators are booked under Section 147 of the Railways Act. Beyond railway regulations, the situation is further complicated by the Goa Forest Department, which has banned public entry to waterfalls within wildlife sanctuaries for the 2026 monsoon. Additionally, the South Goa District Magistrate has invoked the Disaster Management Act, 2005, meaning those who trespass may face criminal prosecution in addition to the railway fines.
Enforcement and Safe Viewing Options
Under the guidance of Senior Divisional Security Commissioner Alok Kumar, the Hubballi RPF has intensified surveillance in the Dudhsagar region. Special task forces from Castle Rock, Belagavi, and Vasco are patrolling the area to prevent further incidents. Railway officials have issued a strong appeal to tourists to prioritize safety and avoid trespassing on railway property, which is both illegal and dangerous.
For those wishing to witness the beauty of Dudhsagar Falls, authorities emphasize that the only safe and legal viewing method is from a passing train on the Vasco da Gama–Castle Rock line. Tourists should note that jeep safaris originating from Collem (Kulem) remain suspended during the monsoon and are only scheduled to resume from October, subject to mandatory online bookings. Travelers are urged to respect these regulations to avoid legal action and ensure the safety of themselves and others.
