How will this new line impact travel and economy?
The new rail route will significantly reduce travel time and costs for the people of Mizoram. Previously, travel to Aizawl depended on roads, which often became blocked during the monsoon season. One of the biggest highlights is Bridge No. 144 over the Kurung River. This pier bridge is between 104 to 114 meters high, making it taller than the Qutub Minar and the second-tallest railway pier bridge in India.
What are the future plans for this route?
The government is planning to extend the line further to the Myanmar border. A survey is underway for a 223-kilometer extension from Sairang to Hmawngbuchhuah. This will connect Northeast India with the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project in Myanmar to boost international trade.
