Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, or CSMT, in Mumbai is one of the busiest railway stations in India. Starting from October 1, Platform 18 will be closed for almost two months for redevelopment work.
This closure is part of a larger ₹2,450-crore project aiming to modernize the station. Platform 18 is important as it handles major long-distance trains like the Rajdhani and Shatabdi, and it helps passengers easily reach P D’Mello Road and the Eastern Freeway.
During this closure, long-distance trains that usually use Platform 18 will be moved to other platforms. While suburban train services should not be affected, passengers should be ready for some delays in train maintenance activities like cleaning and safety checks.
Platforms 11 to 18 manage around 40 to 45 long-distance trains daily, with Platform 18 alone serving six to eight trains. Each day, over 1 lakh passengers rely on CSMT for their long-distance journeys.
The redevelopment of CSMT aims to preserve its historic charm while adding modern facilities. Currently, about 15 percent of the project is done, and it will eventually include better amenities and a spacious waiting area for passengers.
