Indian Railways is planning to increase the speed of Vande Bharat trains from 160 kmph to 200 kmph under Mission Raftaar. This move will significantly reduce travel time between major cities. The government aims to make these trains run at semi-high speed without building entirely new corridors.
How will travel time change for passengers
The increase in speed will benefit passengers on the busiest routes of the country. The Ministry of Railways stated that the journey from Delhi to Mumbai will now take around 10 hours instead of 16 hours. Similarly, the travel time from Delhi to Kolkata will drop from 17 hours to 11 hours, saving passengers about 5 to 6 hours of time.
What is the plan for infrastructure and tracks
To support this speed, the railway is working on multi-tracking, which includes laying third and fourth lines on the Golden Quadrilateral and Diagonal routes. An investment of approximately 3 lakh crore rupees is being made for this purpose. The Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah routes are expected to be ready by 2026-27, while other routes will be completed by 2030.
