North Western Railway (NWR) has set up its first water recycling plant at Barmer railway station in Rajasthan. General Manager Amitabh inaugurated the facility on June 4, 2026, during his visit to the city. This project aims to tackle the severe water crisis in the desert region by reusing water used in railway operations.

How does the water recycling plant work?

The plant collects wastewater from the railway laundry, where bedsheets, pillow covers, and towels are washed. This water goes through a multi-stage treatment process to remove soap residues, dirt, and solid particles. After chemical and biological treatment, filtration, and disinfection, the water becomes pure enough to be reused for washing tasks.

What are the key details of the project?

Feature Details
Project Cost ₹2.57 Crore
Recycling Capacity Approximately 80% of water
Location Barmer, Rajasthan
Primary Use Railway Laundry
Impact Saving lakhs of liters of water monthly

What are the future plans for this technology?

General Manager Amitabh stated that based on the success of the Barmer plant, NWR will prepare proposals to install similar recycling plants in other divisions. This initiative focuses on sustainable development and water conservation in water-stressed areas of Western Rajasthan.
