Indian Railways Luggage Rules: Check free weight limits and penalties for excess baggage

Indian Railways has reiterated its long-standing rules regarding luggage to ensure passenger safety and reduce congestion in coaches. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw clarified in the Lok Sabha that these rules are meant to improve travel comfort for everyone. Passengers carrying luggage beyond the permitted limit will now face stricter enforcement and penalties.

What is the free luggage allowance for different classes?

The amount of luggage you can carry for free depends on the class of your ticket. If you exceed the free limit, you must pay charges up to the maximum permissible limit. Here are the details:

What are the penalties and size restrictions?

If a passenger carries luggage beyond the free allowance, they will be charged 1.5 times the standard rate. However, if unbooked excess luggage is caught during the journey, the penalty can be as high as six times the luggage scale rate. There are also strict size limits for bags:

  • Sleeper and General: Max size 100 cm x 60 cm x 25 cm.
  • AC 3-Tier and Chair Car: Max size 55 cm x 45 cm x 22.5 cm.
  • Items exceeding these sizes or commercial merchandise must be booked in the brake van or parcel van.

How to book extra luggage and what is prohibited?

Passengers can book extra luggage at the luggage office at least 30 minutes before the train departs or up to 24 hours in advance. The minimum booking charge is Rs. 30. It is important to remember that explosives, inflammable materials, corrosive substances, and offensive articles are strictly prohibited on all trains.

What happens if I carry excess luggage without booking?

If unbooked or partially booked excess luggage is detected during the journey, the passenger may be charged a penalty of up to six times the luggage scale rate.

Can I carry any size of bag in AC 3-Tier coaches?

No, luggage in AC 3-Tier and AC Chair Car must not exceed the dimensions of 55 cm x 45 cm x 22.5 cm. Larger items must be booked in the parcel van.
