Monsoon Readiness: Indian Railways starts major preparations to prevent train delays during heavy rains

Indian Railways has started extensive preparations across various zones to ensure that train speeds and schedules are not affected by the upcoming monsoon. Major focus areas include Western Railway, Central Railway, Konkan Railway, and West Central Railway. Officials from these zones have announced a series of safety and infrastructure measures to prevent waterlogging and technical failures.

What steps are being taken to prevent technical failures and waterlogging?

To avoid signal failures during heavy rain, Western Railway is installing waterproof plastic covers on 1,860 out of 2,474 signal devices. At Matunga station, the rail tracks have been raised by 6.5 inches on the down line and 5.25 inches on the up line. Additionally, the drainage pipeline diameter has been increased from 400 mm to 1250 mm to ensure faster water exit.

How is the railway ensuring safety on tracks and bridges?

Indian Railways will deploy permanent guards at sensitive sites and bridges to monitor water levels 24/7. Konkan Railway has deployed trained staff for round-the-clock patrolling and placed excavation machinery at strategic points for quick action during disasters. West Central Railway has linked its control room with the Meteorological Department for weather updates every three hours.
