Indian Railways has issued a strict directive regarding unreserved digital tickets, mandating that passengers must now present their tickets exclusively through the official RailOne app on their registered mobile devices. This policy, reinforced between July 9 and July 13, 2026, aims to eliminate ticket fraud and ensure seamless verification for ticket examiners.
- Screenshots, PDFs, and forwarded images are now strictly invalid.
- Tickets must be displayed on the original booking device.
- Passengers must carry a valid photo ID alongside their mobile phone.
- Tickets must be booked prior to the train’s departure from the boarding station.
Strengthening Ticket Authentication
The national transporter has reiterated that while digital ticketing is encouraged, the authenticity of the booking must be verifiable. Under the updated regulations, photographs, screenshots, or tickets shared via WhatsApp are no longer accepted as proof of travel. This move is designed to address issues regarding tampering and the difficulty officials face in verifying third-party digital copies. While these rules affect unreserved digital tickets, reserved e-tickets remain unaffected by this specific mandate.
Why the Change Was Necessary
Railway officials, including representatives from the South East Central Railway, highlighted that the policy change is a response to rising instances of digital ticket misuse. A notable example involved a passenger on the Korba-Visakhapatnam Link Express who faced penalties for using a forwarded digital ticket that was booked after the train had already departed.
To further curb unauthorized travel, the minimum penalty for traveling without a proper ticket was increased from ₹250 to ₹500, effective June 19, 2026. While the railway administration maintains that these steps are essential to streamline operations and prevent fraud, the announcement has triggered a wave of discussion on social media regarding potential convenience issues for daily commuters who may face technical glitches or battery-related issues with their mobile devices.
Passengers are advised to ensure their RailOne app is updated and their tickets are booked well in advance of reaching the station to avoid unnecessary fines or travel disruptions.
