Mathura Junction is currently witnessing an extraordinary surge in passenger traffic as approximately 1.5 crore pilgrims are expected to visit for the Guru Purnima, Mudiya Purnima, and Govardhan Parikrama festivities between July 24 and July 31, 2026. With the peak of Guru Purnima occurring today, July 29, 2026, station premises have been overwhelmed by devotees, prompting North Central Railway to implement large-scale crowd control and safety measures to ensure passenger security.
- 17 Mela Special trains are currently in operation to handle the massive influx of pilgrims.
- Safety infrastructure includes a 3,500 square feet waterproof holding area and 24×7 CCTV surveillance.
- Ticketing capacity has been bolstered with 14 extra booking counters and 22 dedicated facilitators.
- Railway operations were disrupted following a goods train derailment near Vrindavan on July 28, 2026.
Enhanced Operational Support
To manage the unprecedented footfall, North Central Railway has deployed over 110 additional personnel across Mathura and Govardhan stations. Alongside the 17 Mela Special trains, authorities have increased the frequency of five existing trains and extended the routes of five pairs of regular services to accommodate the crowds. Furthermore, six on-demand special trains have been pressed into service to clear the rush. Divisional Railway Manager Gagan Goyal is personally overseeing the real-time monitoring of operations to ensure smooth pilgrim movement.
Derailment Complicates Travel
Travel plans for thousands were disrupted after a goods train derailed near Vrindavan on July 28, 2026. The incident forced the cancellation or diversion of over a dozen trains, leaving many passengers stranded. General Manager of Northern Central Railways, UC Joshi, confirmed that track restoration work is being conducted on a war footing, with repairs expected to take at least 24 hours to normalize traffic flow.
Noteworthy Incidents
Amid the heavy rush and operational challenges, Mathura Junction also witnessed a heartwarming moment on July 26, 2026. A woman pilgrim safely delivered a healthy baby girl on Platform 6. The mother and child received immediate, life-saving assistance from the railway medical team stationed at the platform, highlighting the preparedness of the railway staff during this high-pressure period.
