Indian Railways has officially approved a major infrastructure project aimed at boosting rail capacity and operational efficiency in Bihar. Sanctioned on August 1, 2026, this ambitious initiative involves a total investment of ₹976 crore to undertake extensive multitracking work on the critical Danapur–Fatuha section. This development is set to provide much-needed relief to one of the busiest corridors in the East Central Railway zone.
Key highlights of the infrastructure project:
- Project cost: ₹976 crore.
- Focus area: 29-kilometer Danapur–Fatuha section.
- Construction of 3rd and 4th lines between Danapur and Patna.
- Construction of a 3rd line between Rajendra Nagar and Patna Saheb.
- Construction of 3rd and 4th lines between Patna Saheb and Fatuha.
- Target capacity: 22 additional passenger trains and 18 additional freight trains daily.
- Annual freight handling capacity to increase by 5.2 million tonnes.
Strategic Importance of the Patna Rail Corridor
This project is a vital component of the broader quadrupling program on the high-density Delhi–Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction–Patna–Kiul–Bhagalpur–Howrah route. By adding these new tracks, Indian Railways aims to significantly decongest the Patna region, which currently faces heavy traffic pressure. The expansion will not only improve the punctuality of existing passenger services but also streamline the movement of goods across the state.
Supporting Industrial Growth
Beyond passenger convenience, the upgraded section is designated as part of the Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor. This is particularly significant for the industrial landscape of Bihar, as it will facilitate the seamless transportation of raw materials and coal to the 2,120 MW thermal power plant at Chausa in the Buxar district. By strengthening logistics infrastructure, the railway is playing a proactive role in supporting the region’s energy and industrial requirements. Once completed, the project will serve as a backbone for both local commuters and the growing freight demands of Eastern India.
