Starting August 1, 2026, the West Central Railway is set to overhaul the Tatkal ticket booking process by introducing a mandatory token system. This new initiative will be rolled out across 92 stations in the Jabalpur zone, including 12 stations under the Bhopal Division and the busy Itarsi Junction, to reduce station congestion and prevent touting activities.
Key highlights of the new Tatkal booking system include:
- AC Tatkal tokens will be issued between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM.
- Non-AC (sleeper) Tatkal tokens will be issued between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM.
- Tokens are strictly non-transferable and require valid ID proof like Aadhaar or Voter ID.
- Priority is given to Category A (self and immediate family) over Category B (general applicants).
- Each counter is limited to 10 tokens for AC and 15 tokens for non-AC bookings initially.
Understanding the Token Priority and Process
To ensure transparency, the railways have categorized applicants. Category A includes individuals booking for themselves or immediate family members such as spouses, parents, siblings, or children. These passengers receive priority service upon providing self-attested identity proof and necessary relationship evidence. Category B, which covers all other passengers, will be served only after all Category A requests are processed. Once all token holders are served, any remaining Tatkal seats will be released on a standard first-come, first-served basis.
Booking Timings and Official Stance
It is important to note that the actual booking windows remain unchanged. AC Tatkal reservations open at 10:00 AM, while non-AC Tatkal bookings commence at 11:00 AM, one day prior to the journey date. Passengers should remember that confirmed Tatkal tickets are non-refundable upon cancellation.
Railway officials, including Saurabh Kataria of the Bhopal Division, have stated that this system is a strategic move to curb the influence of unauthorized touts and ensure that genuine passengers have a fair chance at securing tickets. By formalizing the queue through tokens, the division aims to create a more efficient and equitable environment at reservation counters across the entire region.
