Indian Railways has officially launched a new token-based system for Tatkal train ticket bookings at physical reservation counters starting today, August 1, 2026. Spearheaded by the West Central Railway (WCR), this initiative is designed to eliminate long queues, prevent overcrowding at stations, and bring more transparency to the offline booking process. Please note that this update applies exclusively to offline counter bookings; all online Tatkal reservations via the IRCTC website or mobile app remain unaffected.
Key highlights of the new system include:
- AC Tatkal tokens: Issued between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM.
- Non-AC Tatkal tokens: Issued between 9:00 AM and 9:30 AM.
- Token limits: Initially set at 10 for AC and 15 for non-AC bookings, subject to demand-based adjustments.
- Categorization: Category A (self/family with ID proof) is prioritized over Category B (general/commercial).
- Non-transferability: Tokens are strictly non-transferable and require a valid government-issued photo ID.
Streamlining the Passenger Experience
Under this new protocol, passengers are required to collect their tokens during the designated morning windows before returning to the reservation counter during their allotted time slot. This shift effectively removes the need for passengers to wait in extended, chaotic lines. By organizing the process into specific windows, railway authorities aim to ensure that the booking experience is orderly and efficient for everyone involved.
Saurabh Jain, the Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Sr DCM) of the Kota Division, emphasized that the primary goal of this rollout is to create a more disciplined environment at reservation counters. By minimizing congestion, the Railways hopes to reduce the stress associated with securing last-minute travel.
What happens if tickets remain available?
For passengers who may not have secured a token, there is still a pathway for booking. The railway administration has confirmed that if Tatkal seats remain available after all token holders have completed their transactions, the remaining inventory will be opened to walk-in passengers on a first-come, first-served basis. Passengers are advised to ensure they have all traveler details ready and valid identification in hand to facilitate a smooth booking process at the counter.
