Indian Railways is currently fast-tracking a series of transformative infrastructure projects across Uttarakhand to bolster connectivity in the Himalayan region. As of April 1, 2025, the national transporter has sanctioned three new railway lines spanning 216 km with a total investment of ₹40,384 crore. Key highlights of these developments include:
- The 125-km Rishikesh-Karnaprayag rail line is the flagship project, costing ₹38,953 crore.
- As of July 29, 2026, 101 km of the 104 km mainline tunnels have been successfully completed.
- Expenditure on the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag project has reached ₹28,828 crore as of June.
- New connectivity initiatives include the launch of the Ramnagar-Dehradun Express and plans for 11 station redevelopments.
Progress on the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag Corridor
The Rishikesh-Karnaprayag line remains the cornerstone of the state’s rail expansion. Designed to provide all-weather access to the Garhwal Himalayas and vital border areas, the project traverses through Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Rudraprayag, and Chamoli districts. According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the project is moving at a steady pace, with 11 out of 19 major bridges already completed. Furthermore, over 95 km of the 12 planned escape tunnels have been finished, ensuring that the project meets stringent safety and operational standards. The line is being executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL).
Expanding Services and Future Connectivity
Beyond new construction, the Ministry of Railways is actively evaluating proposals to enhance passenger convenience. Minister Vaishnaw has confirmed that the state government’s request to extend the Dehradun-Kota Nanda Devi Express to Mumbai is currently under technical and operational review.
To bridge the gap between the Kumaon and Garhwal regions, the Railways has already launched the Ramnagar-Dehradun Express. Additionally, a comprehensive master plan is underway to upgrade rail infrastructure in Haridwar and Rishikesh. This includes the redevelopment of 11 railway stations across the state to provide modern amenities to pilgrims and tourists. Meanwhile, the state government is reviewing a 400-meter railway freeze zone around the Rishikesh-Karnaprayag project to ensure that regional development and railway safety go hand-in-hand.
