Indian Railways strengthens fire safety measures and emergency response systems across network

Indian Railways has reinforced its commitment to passenger safety by implementing a comprehensive fire prevention and emergency preparedness framework across its nationwide network. With a strong focus on minimizing risks, the national transporter has significantly reduced consequential train accidents from 135 in 2014-15 to just two in 2026-27. This improvement follows a massive investment of over Rs 5.41 lakh crore in safety-related activities over the last five financial years.

  • 177 Accident Relief Trains (ARTs) and 170 Accident Relief Medical Equipment (ARME) units are positioned strategically.
  • 100 high-capacity 140-tonne breakdown cranes are deployed for rapid emergency response.
  • Coaches are built with fire-retardant materials, including seats, flooring, and electrical wiring.
  • 71 full-scale mock drills were conducted in 2025-26 to ensure operational readiness.
  • The 139 Rail Madad helpline remains the primary contact point for reporting emergencies or suspicious activities.

Advanced Fire Prevention Technology

Modern train sets, including the Amrit Bharat and Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, now utilize upgraded materials that meet global fire safety benchmarks. Every passenger coach is equipped with at least two fire extinguishers, while high-risk areas like pantry and power cars feature automated fire detection and suppression systems. Additionally, electrical cabinets are fitted with aerosol-based fire suppression systems to prevent short-circuit-related fires.

For passengers, the newer Vande Bharat rakes offer enhanced safety features like Emergency Talk Back Units and Passenger Emergency Alarm Buttons in every coach. Railway stations are similarly equipped with automatic fire alarm systems, fire buckets, and public address systems to guide commuters during emergencies.

Training and Incident Management

To maintain high safety standards, frontline staff—including loco pilots, guards, and station managers—undergo specialized training at the Indian Railways Institute of Disaster Management (IRIDM). The curriculum focuses heavily on firefighting, first aid, and trauma management.

The importance of these systems was highlighted during a recent incident on August 7, 2026, involving Train 63344 at Simri Bakhtiyarpur station in Bihar. While the fire caused damage to two MEMU railcars, the robust safety protocols ensured that all passengers were evacuated safely without injury. An official inquiry into the cause of the fire is currently underway, and the Railway Protection Force (RPF) continues to urge passengers to remain vigilant and report any inflammable materials or suspicious activities immediately via the 139 helpline.
