In a major relief for budget-conscious travellers, Indian Railways announced on August 9, 2026, a strategic plan to significantly increase the availability of general and sleeper class coaches across its network. This initiative aims to standardize the composition of Mail and Express trains to 24 LHB coaches, ensuring a more comfortable and accessible journey for millions of passengers. By enhancing coach capacity, the national transporter expects to accommodate an additional 32 to 36 crore passengers annually.

Enhanced Capacity and Implementation Strategy
Currently, many long-distance services operate with 18 to 22 coaches, often limiting non-AC accommodation to just four to six sleeper and two to three general compartments. Under the new directive, trains that currently run with only two general coaches will see that number doubled to four, while services previously lacking general coaches will be allocated at least two. To meet this demand, the Integral Coach Factory (Chennai) and Rail Coach Factory (Kapurthala) are currently accelerating the production of non-AC coaches.
Regional Impact and Rollout
The transition is already underway across various zones. The North Central Railway (NCR) will see over 730 trains benefit, with 42 pairs of trains receiving four ordinary coaches, positively impacting over three lakh daily commuters. Similarly, the South Central Railway (SCR) is upgrading its Express and Superfast services, while the East Central Railway (ECR) is scheduled to add two to four coaches to over 300 trains by March 2027. This rollout follows the successful introduction of the New Delhi-Supaul special train on August 5, 2026, which features four ordinary coaches in its 16-coach configuration.
As Indian Railways expands its capacity, officials have reiterated that travelling without a valid ticket remains a legal offence. Passengers are urged to plan their journeys through official channels and ensure they hold valid travel documents.
