In a significant move to improve the passenger experience, Indian Railways has launched a revamped cleaning system for general and sleeper coaches. Announced by Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on August 9, 2026, this initiative marks a historic shift in how the national transporter maintains its trains. For the first time, general coaches will be held to the same rigorous hygiene standards as first-class coaches, serving as a cornerstone of the broader Railway Reforms plan that includes 52 distinct infrastructure and service improvements.
Key highlights of the new cleaning initiative include:
- Uniform Standards: General coaches will now receive the same level of cleaning attention as premium first-class coaches.
- Targeted Implementation: 80 long-distance trains have been selected for this enhanced program over the next six months.
- Frequent Maintenance: Dedicated staff will clean toilets, garbage bins, and cabins every one to one-and-a-half hours.
- Consolidated Linen Management: All linen services, from distribution to cleaning, are now under a single agency to ensure better accountability.
- Real-time Monitoring: The entire process is now under constant surveillance to ensure strict adherence to safety and hygiene protocols.
Enhanced Onboard Services and Policy Updates
The railway administration is not stopping at coach cleaning. As of August 8, 2026, the Sadbhavana Express (14014/13), which runs between Anand Vihar and Sultanpur, has officially commenced onboard housekeeping services and a streamlined linen distribution facility. This pilot reflects the Railway Board’s commitment to improving the daily travel experience for long-distance passengers.
Furthermore, the Railway Board is currently reviewing its station cleaning policy. As of August 8, 2026, the board has requested feedback from various railway zones regarding a potential relaxation of criteria for mechanized cleaning at stations. This review aims to optimize how station premises are maintained while ensuring that cleanliness remains a top priority across the entire network. By consolidating service providers and increasing the frequency of cleaning cycles, Indian Railways aims to set a new benchmark for hygiene and passenger comfort across its vast fleet.
