Passengers planning to travel on August 14, 2026, can begin securing their Tatkal tickets one day prior, on August 13, 2026. Indian Railways has confirmed that the booking windows will follow the standard operational timings, with specific slots allocated based on the class of travel to manage the high demand effectively. Whether you are opting for luxury or comfort, it is essential to be ready at your screen when the clock strikes the designated time.
- AC Class Bookings: 1A, 2A, 3A, CC, EC, and 3E open at 10:00 AM IST.
- Non-AC Class Bookings: Sleeper, First Class, and Second Seating open at 11:00 AM IST.
- Mandatory Aadhaar Authentication: OTP verification linked to your Aadhaar is compulsory for all online Tatkal reservations.
- Agent Restrictions: Authorized agents are blocked from booking during the first 30 minutes of each window.
- Offline Token System: New queue management at PRS counters is now active across the network.
Understanding Tatkal Rules and Charges
Tatkal tickets remain one of the most sought-after options for last-minute travel. It is important to remember that each PNR allows for a maximum of four passengers, and no concessions are applicable on these bookings. Regarding the pricing structure, the Tatkal charges are calculated as 10% of the basic fare for Second Class and 30% for all other classes, subject to the railway’s predefined minimum and maximum limits.
New Security and Booking Enhancements
To ensure a fair booking experience for individual passengers, Indian Railways has implemented several robust measures. Since July 2025, Aadhaar authentication has become mandatory for online bookings, requiring an OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Furthermore, to prevent bulk bookings by unauthorized entities, ticketing agents are restricted from accessing the system during the initial 30-minute “rush hour” of both AC and non-AC booking windows.
For those visiting physical Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters, a new token system is now in place to reduce overcrowding. This system mandates token distribution between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM for AC classes, and 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM for non-AC classes. Additionally, the ongoing migration to an upgraded PRS system, which began in August 2026, is helping the network handle significantly higher inquiry and booking loads, ensuring a smoother digital experience for all travelers.
