Railway operations on a critical reversible line in Jharkhand’s Palamu district have officially resumed following a 28-hour disruption caused by a freight train derailment. The incident, which involved a coal-laden goods train, occurred on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, near the Grasim Factory between Garhwa Road and Sigsigi railway stations. While the derailment caused significant infrastructure damage, authorities confirmed that passenger services remained unaffected throughout the restoration period.

Key highlights of the incident and recovery:

  • 11 to 12 wagons of the coal-laden freight train derailed on the Barkakana-Sonnagar section.
  • The incident took place at approximately 11:00 AM on August 11, 2026.
  • No casualties or injuries were reported following the derailment.
  • Railway authorities completed restoration work on a war footing after 28 hours of intensive effort.
  • While the reversible line was suspended, up and down passenger train lines continued to operate normally.

Restoration and Investigation Efforts

Following the accident, which occurred on the border of the Dhanbad Rail Division and the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Rail Division, senior railway officials including Traffic Inspector Anil Tiwari and Garhwa Junction Station Manager Satish Kumar supervised the site. The derailment caused substantial damage to both the railway tracks and the freight wagons, with initial estimates suggesting the economic loss could exceed one crore rupees.

With the reversible line now fully operational, the East Central Railway has launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact cause of the derailment. Railway officials emphasized that this inquiry is crucial to identify technical or operational lapses and to implement necessary safety measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. Passengers and freight operators are advised that normal scheduling has been restored across the section, and authorities are currently focusing on clearing the remaining debris and finalizing the accident report.
