Indian Railways clarifies official lifespan policy for ICF coaches

Recent social media rumors claiming that Indian Railways has slashed the service life of Integral Coach Factory (ICF) design coaches to 13 years and halted all repair work are entirely inaccurate. To clear the air, the national transporter has reaffirmed that there has been no blanket policy change regarding the operational lifespan of these coaches. Passengers and rail enthusiasts should note the following key facts:

* The official **codal life for ICF coaches remains fixed at 20 to 25 years**.

* Production of new ICF-style coaches was **officially stopped in 2018** in favor of modern LHB coaches.

* Safety inspections have been intensified since June 2026, but this is a standard protocol, not a reduction in service life.

* Coaches identified as structurally unfit are condemned based on individual condition, not arbitrary age limits.

Understanding the Transition to LHB Coaches

Indian Railways is currently undergoing a massive fleet modernization program. The primary objective is to replace the older ICF-design coaches with **Linke Hofmann Bosch (LHB) coaches**, which are widely recognized for their superior safety features and ability to operate at higher speeds. This transition is a long-term infrastructure goal intended to improve the overall passenger experience and safety standards across the Indian Railways network.

Safety Protocols and Maintenance

Following the safety drive initiated in **June 2026**, Zonal Railways have been given the authority to identify and withdraw coaches that show signs of severe rust, corrosion, or structural degradation. This is a proactive safety measure. If a specific coach is deemed too costly to repair or poses a safety risk, it is withdrawn from service. For instance, specific fleets like those used in **Garib Rath services** have seen faster withdrawal rates due to unique maintenance challenges.

However, this does not mean these coaches are simply discarded. In many cases, older coaches that are no longer fit for passenger service are **repurposed for departmental use** or converted into **New Modified Goods (NMG) carriers**. This strategy allows the railways to extend the utility of the rolling stock beyond their standard passenger service life. Passengers are advised to rely on official communications from the Ministry of Railways regarding coach safety and fleet policies rather than unverified social media speculation.
