Northern Railway has officially launched a major infrastructure project to reconstruct the Pul Bangash and Pul Dufferin Railway Overbridges (ROB) in Delhi. These structures have been officially declared structurally hazardous, necessitating immediate intervention to ensure public safety. To complete this complex engineering work, both bridges will remain closed to all vehicular traffic until December 31, 2027, marking a 16-month period of significant traffic diversion.

  • Project Scope: Complete reconstruction of Pul Bangash and Pul Dufferin ROBs.
  • Closure Timeline: Bridges will remain closed to traffic until December 31, 2027.
  • Phased Implementation: Pul Bangash ROB closure began August 13, 2026; Pul Dufferin ROB follows on September 10, 2026.
  • Commuter Advisory: Delhi Traffic Police have issued mandatory route diversions and urged motorists to plan for extra travel time.

Understanding the Traffic Impact

The reconstruction process is being carried out in phases to manage the logistical challenges of operating in a high-density urban area. The closure for the Pul Bangash ROB commenced on August 13, 2026, initially impacting the carriageway moving from Azad Market toward Lala Hardev Sahai Marg. Following this, the Pul Dufferin ROB is scheduled for closure on September 10, 2026. Once these phases are fully implemented, both bridges will be completely inaccessible to the public to prevent any potential safety risks during the construction activities.

Advisory for Delhi Commuters

Given the central location of these bridges, the Delhi Traffic Police have released a comprehensive advisory to help manage the flow of vehicles. Commuters are strongly urged to utilize alternative routes and stay updated on revised bus schedules to avoid being caught in heavy congestion. Railway officials and traffic police emphasize that motorists should allow for extra travel time and strictly adhere to all temporary signage, barricades, and the directives provided by on-site traffic personnel. This project is a critical step in modernizing Delhi’s railway infrastructure and ensuring long-term safety for all road and rail users.
