Indian Railways has announced a major relief for passengers planning to travel during the upcoming summer holidays. To manage the heavy rush and long waiting lists, the railway administration will operate approximately 2,000 special train trips between April and July 2026. These trains will connect key cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Patna, Kolkata, and Howrah, ensuring a smoother journey for families and students traveling home for vacations.

Major routes and train schedules for summer 2026
Different railway zones including Central Railway, Northern Railway, and North Eastern Railway have already released the schedules for several special trains. Central Railway alone will operate more than 2,100 summer special trips from 15 April to 31 July. Northern Railway is running 27 special trains covering destinations like Jammu, Katra, and Amritsar. These trains are designed to reduce the load on regular long-distance services and provide more confirmed berths to travelers.

Passenger facilities and expert views on holiday rush
The special trains will feature various coach compositions including AC 2-tier, AC 3-tier, Sleeper, and General Second Class to cater to all types of passengers. According to railway officials, these summer specials are expected to benefit over 1 lakh passengers who otherwise struggle with long waiting lists. Naveen Kumar Jha, Senior DCM of Ambala Division, stated that the Northern Railway always introduces such specials to handle the peak seasonal demand. Similarly, Amit Sudarshan from North Western Railway mentioned that several existing train durations have also been extended to accommodate more people during the April-June period.
