Indian Railways is witnessing a transformative era in passenger services as digital adoption reaches an all-time high. With over 91% of all train tickets now being booked online, the once-bustling physical reservation counters at stations are seeing a significant decline in footfall. This shift marks a major milestone in the national transporter’s efforts to streamline travel planning and reduce passenger inconvenience.

Key highlights of the digital transition include:

  • Online booking figures have climbed from 88% in June 2026 to 91% recently.
  • A modern Passenger Reservation System (PRS) is replacing the 40-year-old legacy infrastructure.
  • A new superfast IRCTC beta website provides a simplified booking experience with fewer steps.
  • Online booking for additional luggage became available starting July 31, 2026.
  • New Tatkal booking rules, including mandatory Aadhaar verification, took effect on August 1, 2026.

Upgrading the Digital Infrastructure

To support this massive influx of digital users, Indian Railways began a phased overhaul of its 40-year-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) in August 2026. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has prioritized a seamless transition to this faster, more reliable technology. Complementing this is the new IRCTC beta website, which has been designed to make booking more intuitive by displaying all class seat availability on a single screen and simplifying CAPTCHA requirements.

Streamlining Tatkal and Luggage Services

Efficiency is also being improved at the ground level to curb malpractices. Since August 1, 2026, the railway has introduced a token system at physical reservation counters to manage crowds systematically. For those using the Tatkal facility, mandatory Aadhaar verification has been implemented for both online and offline bookings to effectively prevent touting activities. Additionally, the ability to book extra luggage online has removed the need for passengers to visit station offices, further saving time.

In a recent report titled “From Queue to Click: Four Decades of Passenger Reservation in Indian Railways” released on August 6, 2026, the ministry highlighted how these technological interventions have successfully transitioned the Indian passenger experience from long, manual queues to a convenient, click-based digital ecosystem.
