Starting August 1, 2026, Indian Railways is rolling out significant updates to its booking procedures and baggage policies to improve passenger convenience and curb unauthorized activity. These changes, alongside updates to LPG regulations and credit card policies, mark a shift toward more streamlined digital and counter-based services for citizens across the country.
Key updates for rail passengers include:
• A new token-based system for Tatkal ticket bookings at reservation counters in the West Central Railway zone.
• Specific time slots for AC and Non-AC Tatkal token distribution to manage crowd control.
• Introduction of an online baggage booking facility through the official IRCTC portal.
• Stricter enforcement of regulations regarding excess baggage charges for all reserved ticket holders.
New Tatkal Booking Procedures
To eliminate the influence of touts and manage long queues at reservation counters, the West Central Railway is introducing a systematic token approach. For AC class travel, tokens will be distributed between 8:30 AM and 9:00 AM, with the booking process officially starting at 10:00 AM. For those seeking Non-AC or Sleeper class tickets, tokens will be issued from 9:30 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by bookings at 11:00 AM. Each counter will provide a limited number of tokens, with priority given to individual passengers and family members over agents.
Enhanced Baggage Services
In a move to simplify travel, Indian Railways is launching an online baggage booking feature via the IRCTC portal effective July 31, 2026. This service is designed for passengers with reserved tickets, allowing them to manage their luggage requirements digitally. Alongside this, authorities will now strictly enforce existing rules concerning excess baggage charges, ensuring that passengers adhere to the prescribed weight limits to maintain safety and comfort on board.
Broader Financial and Utility Updates
Beyond rail travel, consumers should note that August 1 brings changes to LPG and banking services. LPG users must ensure their Aadhaar-based e-KYC is completed to continue receiving subsidies. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries are now entitled to a ₹300 subsidy per cylinder for up to four refills annually. Additionally, the RBI is implementing updates to credit card policies, which may affect reward points, late payment fees, and airport lounge access. Customers are advised to review their banking terms as new CKYC 2.0 identification protocols take effect.
