The Aishbagh Railway Overbridge in Bhopal, famously known for its problematic 90-degree turn, is set for a major design overhaul. After months of delays and safety concerns, the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Railway authorities reached an agreement on April 6, 2026. This decision aims to fix the structural flaw that prevented the bridge from opening to the public since its completion in mid-2025.

Planned changes to the bridge structure

  • The radius of the dangerous turn will be increased by 2 to 2.5 meters
  • The width of the bridge will be increased from 8.5 meters to nearly 11 meters
  • Wider lanes will ensure that heavy vehicles can turn safely without blocking traffic
  • The original construction firm will handle the rectification work under PWD supervision

Official statements and project timeline

K.P.S. Rana, the Engineer in Chief of PWD, confirmed that the department is waiting for the final design from the Railways. The new blueprints are expected within two to three days, after which work will begin on the site within a week. The bridge was built with a budget of 18 crore rupees but remained shut due to the sharp angle that posed a high risk of accidents. Earlier, the state government had suspended seven engineers for their role in this faulty design.
