Indian Railways has announced the extension of several weekly special train services to manage sustained passenger traffic across key routes. These extensions, which continue into late September 2026, are designed to enhance capacity and provide seamless connectivity for travellers moving between major hubs in Gujarat, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. Key highlights of the recent extensions include:
- Lal Kuan-Rajkot (05045/05046): Extended by 11 trips, operating until September 27 and 28, 2026.
- Udhna-Madhubani (09045/09046) and Udhna-Jhanjharpur (09047/09048): Granted three additional trips each, running through July 27, 2026.
- Charlapalli–Shalimar (08046/08045): Eight additional trips added in each direction until September 2026.
- Agra Cantt-Kolkata (01911/01912): A new service offering 10 trips in each direction until September 25, 2026.
Focus on Passenger Demand and Network Capacity
The decision to extend these services follows a high-level review conducted by Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on July 22, 2026. Data shows that Indian Railways successfully operated 18,262 summer special trips between April 15 and July 15, 2026, with a specific focus on high-demand hubs such as Udhna (Surat). This proactive approach ensures that passengers travelling to and from Gujarat and northern India have reliable transit options.
Strategic Network Enhancements
Beyond these specific routes, Western Railway has also extended four special trains connecting Gujarat and northern India until August 2026. Bookings for these services are already open, allowing passengers to plan their journeys in advance. The South Central Railway has similarly bolstered connectivity between Hyderabad and West Bengal by extending the Charlapalli–Shalimar service.
Railway officials have indicated that while these extensions currently cover travel through September, further decisions regarding the continuation of these services will depend on real-time passenger demand and operational feasibility.
