Indian Railways Increases Penalty for Expired Platform Tickets to 500 Rupees

Indian Railways has officially updated its penalty structure for platform ticket violations, bringing the new fine to 500 rupees. This change comes under the recently enacted Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026, which aims to streamline minor railway infractions. Passengers and visitors must now be extra cautious about their time spent on station premises, as the grace period for platform tickets remains strictly capped at two hours.

  • New Penalty: The fine for an expired platform ticket has been increased from 250 to 500 rupees.
  • Validity: A platform ticket is valid for a maximum of two hours from the time of purchase.
  • Enforcement: Ticket Checking Staff (TTEs) are authorized to collect the fine on the spot under Sections 137 and 138 of the Railway Act, 1989.
  • Strict Rule: The fine applies regardless of train delays or operational schedule changes.

Understanding the New Rules

The primary purpose of a platform ticket is to allow individuals to enter the station premises to drop off or receive passengers. With the implementation of the new guidelines, railway authorities are emphasizing that the two-hour validity period is mandatory. If you are found on the platform after your ticket expires, you will be liable for the increased 500-rupee penalty.

Railway officials have clarified that the penalty is issued based strictly on the status of the ticket. Even if a train is delayed and you are waiting longer than expected, the regulation does not provide an automatic extension to the ticket’s validity. Consequently, passengers are advised to keep track of their time while at the station to avoid unnecessary fines.

Legal Framework and Enforcement

This regulatory shift is part of a broader effort to move minor railway offenses toward a civil penalty system, making the enforcement process more efficient. Under the authority granted by Sections 137 and 138 of the Railway Act, 1989, Ticket Checking Staff (TTEs) have the power to impose and collect these fines immediately. By increasing the fine amount, the Railways aim to discourage the misuse of station platforms and ensure that space remains available for those who genuinely need to assist passengers. For regular commuters and those who frequently visit railway stations, staying within the two-hour limit is now more important than ever to avoid the 500-rupee charge.
