A small mistake while booking a train ticket can cost a passenger thousands of rupees. A recent incident involving an IT professional shows how a simple typing error in the age column was treated as traveling without a ticket. The Indian Railways and IRCTC have clarified that passenger details must exactly match their government ID.

What happened in the Ramakant M case

Ramakant M traveled from Bengaluru to Nagpur on June 23, 2026, in the Bengaluru-Hazrat Nizamuddin Rajdhani Express. While booking, he accidentally entered his age as ‘1’ instead of ’24’. The TTE treated this as an invalid ticket and charged a fine of ₹7,035 under Section 138 of the Railways Act, 1989.

Railway rules regarding ticket details

According to railway norms, the information on the ticket must match the identity proof provided by the passenger. If there is a mismatch, the passenger can be considered as traveling without a ticket. The Indian Railways and IRCTC justified the action taken in the Rajdhani Express case.

How to avoid such penalties

Passengers should follow these steps to ensure their journey is smooth:

  • Double check name, gender, and age before completing the payment.
  • Ensure all details match the government ID card you carry.
  • If a mistake is found after booking, visit the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter to correct it before the chart is prepared.

Additionally, the minimum fine for traveling without a ticket was increased from ₹250 to ₹500 on June 20, 2026, as per the Jan Vishwas Act, 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Why was the passenger fined despite having a valid ID?

The passenger entered age ‘1’ instead of ’24’. Under Section 138 of the Railways Act, 1989, if ticket details do not match the ID, it is treated as traveling without a ticket.

What is the new minimum fine for traveling without a ticket?

From June 20, 2026, the minimum fine for traveling without a ticket has been increased from ₹250 to ₹500 under the Jan Vishwas Act, 2026.
