Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has ordered a major shift in how departmental exams are conducted. To make the hiring process faster and more transparent, all such exams will now move to Computer Based Test (CBT) mode. The Minister also directed officials to increase the use of Tablet Based Testing (TBT) to reduce delays and errors.

What is the difference between CBT and TBT

CBT requires candidates to take exams on desktop computers in large labs with full infrastructure. On the other hand, TBT uses handheld tablets that do not need a separate keyboard or mouse. TBT is more secure because questions are encrypted and loaded just minutes before the exam, which reduces the risk of paper leaks and cheating.

Recent recruitment data and official goals

The Railway Minister mentioned that the annual recruitment calendar received a positive response from candidates. In the 2025-26 financial year, Indian Railways completed recruitment for 47,084 vacancies across six categories and selected 43,781 candidates.

Post Category Vacancies Filled/Processed
Assistant Loco Pilot 18,799
Technician 14,298
Junior Engineer (JE)/DMS/CMA 7,951
Constable 4,208
Paramedical Staff 1,376
Sub-Inspector 452

How will this change help candidates

The new system will allow the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) to hold exams in more centers, including remote areas. Since TBT needs less infrastructure, more students can take tests closer to their homes. The Minister also emphasized that the railway will now respond quickly to misinformation and maintain better communication with candidates.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
