Severe thunderstorms and strong winds caused trees to fall on railway tracks in several locations, affecting train movements. In India, these weather conditions led to delays and operational hurdles, while similar incidents were reported in the United Kingdom and the United States.

What happened at Musafirkhana station in Amethi

On 29 April 2026, a Jamun tree fell on the railway track near Musafirkhana station in Amethi due to a heavy storm. This incident damaged an electric pole wire and forced the Begumpura Express (Train No. 12237), traveling from Varanasi to Jammu Tawi, to stop. Station Master Amit Shukla confirmed that only one track was affected, and electricity department teams were called to repair the wiring.

IMD alerts and Railway preparations for monsoon

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for heavy rain and winds of 40-60 kmph in Northeast India, Sikkim, and West Bengal from 29 April to 5 May. This may lead to disruptions in local trains and damage to communication lines. Meanwhile, North East Frontier Railway (NFR) has formed Quick Response Teams to handle landslides and waterlogging during the upcoming monsoon season from June to September.
