Indian Railways introduced two modern trains, Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat, in 2023 to upgrade travel for different types of passengers. While both are built by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) Chennai, they serve very different purposes. One focuses on premium luxury and speed, while the other aims to provide affordable, high-quality travel for the common man.

What are the main differences between Vande Bharat and Amrit Bharat?

Vande Bharat is a semi-high-speed luxury train designed for medium distances, targeting premium travelers with AC Executive and Chair Car coaches. On the other hand, Amrit Bharat is a non-AC superfast express designed for long distances, specifically for migrant laborers and low-to-middle income groups. The speed and technology also differ, as Vande Bharat is a self-propelling unit, while Amrit Bharat uses a push-pull locomotive system.

The Indian Railways recently unveiled two new Amrit Bharat Express trains on April 28, 2026, connecting Banaras to Hadapsar and Ayodhya Cantt to LTT Mumbai. This will improve connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. By March 2026, the number of operational Amrit Bharat trains reached 60. The railways also plan to launch Amrit Bharat 3.0 in April 2026, which will feature better legroom, improved berths, and potentially AC coaches.

Which facilities are available in these trains?

Vande Bharat offers high-end features like rotating seats in Executive Class, GPS-based info systems, and Kavach safety technology. Amrit Bharat focuses on practical improvements for general passengers, such as sensor-based water taps, CCTV cameras, mobile holders, and zero-discharge modular toilets. Rail Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that Amrit Bharat aims to provide high-quality service to lower-income groups under the ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ vision.
