Indian Railways is embarking on a series of major upgrades aimed at enhancing passenger safety, embracing green energy, and streamlining the digital booking experience. From the deployment of the advanced Kavach 4.0 safety system to the introduction of India’s first hydrogen-powered train, these initiatives mark a significant shift toward a more modern and sustainable rail network.

Enhancing Safety with Kavach 4.0
To bolster safety across its busiest networks, Indian Railways has approved a ₹206-crore project to install Kavach Version 4.0. This indigenous Automatic Train Protection system will be implemented across 680 route kilometres within the Northern Railway’s Delhi Division, specifically focusing on the Rewari-Delhi and Shakurbasti-Bathinda sections. The system is designed to prevent train collisions and ‘Signal Passed at Danger’ (SPAD) incidents by automatically applying brakes, ensuring safe operations even during low-visibility conditions like dense fog.
India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Train
In a historic step for sustainable transport, the country’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered passenger train is set for inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17. Operating on the 89-kilometre Jind-Sonipat section in Haryana, this 10-coach trainset features a 1,200 KW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system. Capable of reaching a top speed of 75 kmph, it produces zero harmful emissions, emitting only water vapor. This project represents a major milestone, setting a global benchmark as the world’s longest hydrogen-powered trainset.
Digital and Infrastructure Upgrades
Beyond safety and green technology, the railways are focusing on user convenience. A revamped beta version of the IRCTC website is in the pipeline, designed to provide a seamless booking experience. Key updates include the removal of unnecessary captchas and pop-ups, improved seat availability visibility, and faster checkout processes for repeat passengers. Furthermore, to support the growing fleet of modern trains, a ₹175-crore project has been approved to expand maintenance facilities at the Raipur HHP Diesel Shed. This facility will be upgraded to maintain an additional 250 three-phase electric locomotives, ensuring the long-term reliability of the rolling stock.
