Indian Railways is embarking on a major technological transformation by upgrading its nearly four-decade-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS). This ambitious project aims to modernize the ticketing infrastructure to keep pace with the massive surge in digital demand, ensuring faster and more reliable services for millions of daily commuters. The phased rollout of this upgraded system is scheduled to commence in August 2026.
Key highlights of the system upgrade include:
* Massive capacity boost: The new PRS will handle 1.5 lakh ticket bookings and 40 lakh inquiries per minute, a significant jump from the current capacity of 32,000 bookings and 4 lakh inquiries.
* AI-Powered features: Integration of an AI-driven waitlist prediction tool for more accurate confirmation chances.
* Tatkal reforms: Effective August 1, 2026, the system introduces a mandatory Aadhaar verification for online bookings and a new token system at counters.
* Enhanced HHTs: Upgraded Handheld Terminals for TTEs to enable real-time updates of vacant seats, allowing for booking from subsequent stations.
* Modernized Interface: A cloud-based architecture supporting a new, simplified IRCTC beta website and a multilingual user interface.
Transitioning from Legacy Infrastructure
The current PRS, which has been in operation since 1986 and migrated to Itanium servers with an OpenVMS platform in 2010, was built for a different era of digital connectivity. Developed by the Center for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the new system is designed for high scalability and reliability. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has personally reviewed the project, stressing the importance of a smooth transition for all passengers.
Improved Passenger Tools
As part of this digital overhaul, the IRCTC beta website launched in July 2026, offering a cleaner interface and real-time seat availability across all classes. This complements the RailOne app, which was introduced in July 2025 to serve as a single-window platform for bookings, train status, and cancellations. Dharmendra Tiwari, Additional Director General of Public Relations for the Railway Board, confirmed that the phased migration is already underway, marking a significant milestone in the digitalization of Indian Railways. By shifting to a cloud-based framework, the national transporter aims to eliminate booking lag during peak hours and provide a more seamless experience for rail travelers across the country.
