Indian Railways has achieved a major milestone in passenger safety as the indigenous Kavach automatic train protection (ATP) system is now fully operational across the 302-kilometer Nagda-Godhra rail section. Falling under the Western Railway’s Ratlam Division, this critical stretch is a vital part of the high-traffic Delhi-Mumbai corridor. This development, confirmed on July 27, 2026, reinforces the national transporter’s commitment to achieving a “zero accident” vision.

  • The 302-kilometer Nagda-Godhra section is now fully equipped with Kavach technology.
  • Kavach provides automatic braking to prevent collisions and signal passing at danger (SPAD).
  • The system meets global Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL-4) standards.
  • Advanced Kavach 4.0 is being deployed across 2,490 route kilometers on major high-density corridors.

Enhanced Safety Through Technology

Developed by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), Kavach acts as a digital safety shield for train operations. The system is designed to intervene automatically by applying brakes if a loco pilot fails to respond to signals, effectively preventing head-on collisions. Its ability to function reliably during low visibility conditions like dense fog makes it a game-changer for Indian Railways, especially on busy routes where punctuality and safety are paramount.

Implementation and Financial Progress

The successful completion of this 302-kilometer stretch follows a phased rollout, including a 78-kilometer test between Panchpiplia and Mangal Mahudi on July 20, 2026, and an initial 224-kilometer phase completed on March 30, 2026. According to Mukesh Kumar, PRO of the Western Railway Ratlam Division, this integration makes the Delhi-Mumbai route significantly more technologically advanced and secure for passengers.

As per official data, Indian Railways has invested INR 3,874.90 crore in the Kavach project up to June 2026, with an additional INR 2,066.24 crore earmarked for the 2026-27 fiscal year. The project is being executed in collaboration with industry partners including Medha Servo Drives Private Limited, HBL Power Systems Limited, and Kernex Microsystems. With the rollout of Kavach 4.0 across the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors, the network is steadily moving toward a safer, more efficient future for rail travel in India.
