In a major security move ahead of the Independence Day celebrations, Indian Railways has announced the temporary suspension of all parcel booking and handling services at five key railway stations in the national capital. This measure, effective from August 12 to August 15, 2026, is aimed at ensuring the highest level of safety and vigilance across the Delhi railway network during the high-alert period.
The suspension affects the following major hubs:
- New Delhi (NDLS)
- Delhi Junction (Old Delhi)
- Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM)
- Anand Vihar Terminal (ANVT)
- Delhi Sarai Rohilla (DEE)
Strict Restrictions on Parcel Movement
During these four days, the railway administration has strictly prohibited both inward and outward parcel traffic. This restriction covers all modes of cargo, including leased second-class luggage rack coaches, parcel vans, and demand parcel vans. To maintain security, officials have mandated that all parcel warehouses and platforms must remain completely clear of any packages or packing materials. Furthermore, this ban extends to parcel bookings originating from other divisions, such as Agra and Bhopal, that are destined for these five Delhi stations.
Important Guidelines for Passengers
While parcel services are halted, Northern Railway has clarified that passengers are still permitted to carry their personal luggage in coaches as usual. Additionally, an exception has been made for registered newspapers and magazines, which can still be booked provided they pass all necessary commercial formalities and security screenings.
Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northern Railway, emphasized that this is a routine security protocol. Passengers traveling from Delhi during this time are strongly advised to reach the stations well in advance to account for intensified security checks and increased footfall.
Beyond the railways, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will also conduct heightened security checks at Delhi Metro stations from August 9 to August 16. Travelers requiring urgent deliveries during this period are encouraged to utilize private courier services or India Post, as regular railway parcel operations are scheduled to resume on August 16, 2026.
